Here you can find information about elections in Carroll County including the location of polling places; instructions for registering to vote; obtaining an absentee ballot; how to locate your voting precinct; and elected officials. The Office of the General Registrar is responsible for the registration of, and proper maintenance of records and the ensuring of fair and impartial elections for the citizens of Carroll County. General elections are held on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November. For town election, general elections take place the first Tuesday in May. The polls open at 6:00 a.m. and remain open until 7:00 p.m. Carroll County has five election districts and 18 precincts.
How to Register
The National Voter Registration Act adopted by the Virginia Legislature provides many new places to register to vote. Applications can be found at public assistance agencies, disability agencies, discretionary agencies, Department of Motor Vehicles, and in person at the Registrar’s office. Virginia now permits on line registration at http://www.elections.virginia.gov.
A citizen may register year-round, but must be registered 21 days before a general or primary election or 14 days before a special election. Virginia does not have registration by political party. Any person who is 18 years of age on or before the day of the next general election can register in advance and also vote in any intervening primary or special election.
PHOTO ID IS Required to vote in Virginia
You will need to show one acceptable photo identification card (photo ID) whenever you vote in person. This is Virginia law for all voters. Many types of photo ID are acceptable for voting in Virginia. You only need to show ONE acceptable photo ID to vote. Photo IDs can be used to vote up to one year after the ID has expired. Acceptable forms of valid identification:
- Virginia driver’s license
- Virginia DMV-issued photo ID
- United States passport
- Employer-issued photo ID
- Student photo ID issued by a school, college, or university located in Virginia
- Other U.S. or Virginia government-issued photo ID
- Tribal enrollment or other tribal photo ID
- Virginia Voter Photo ID card
NEED A PHOTO ID?
If you don’t have an ID, simply go to your nearest voter registration office to get a free Voter Photo ID, even on Election Day! You will be required to complete an photo ID application, have your photo taken and to sign a digital signature pad.
Forgot your photo ID on Election Day?
If you get to your polling place without acceptable photo ID, you can vote a provisional ballot. You will be given instructions on what to do so your vote can count.
